The Liveable City – Brisbane’s Bike Lanes

The project with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads ran from weeks 1-7 in semester 1, 2014. In response to a brief from the Department, students worked in groups of 2-3 to observe and record in 60 videos how Brisbane’s bike lanes were being used, observing and documenting the points of tension, quantity and variety of lane use. The goal of the project was to introduce the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of public transport design problems and the concept of the “liveable city”, particularly as explored in “A People Oriented Vision for Brisbane” the 2009 report commissioned by the Queensland Government from Gehl Architects.

Kayla Ball and Grace Xia were awarded first prize for their contribution to the project.
